So, we have it! Trump is pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accord and he is doing it in defiance of the 195 countries that signed the Accord. Ignoring the pleas to not leave the accord from the scientific world, international allies, industry leaders; the last four presidents (both Republican and Democrat); the last four Heads of the EPA (both Republican and Democrat) and for God’s Sake even the Pope.
The scientific community almost unanimously states that global warming is man-made and is a threat to the planet. The U.S. Defense Department warns that global warming is a threat to national security. Trump’s Secretary of State and his own family have urged him to not pull out, however, these entreaties fall on deaf ears.
Jobs, Jobs, Jobs
Trump claims that this is all about jobs, however one the country’s leading entrepreneurs, Elon Musk, who is at the forefront of creating new, high paying jobs, has now resigned from Trump’s economic advisory panel in protest. Three hundred leading U.S. corporations, including Apple, Facebook, Google and even energy giants PG&E and Exxon urged Trump to not leave the Paris Accord. All the while, Trump ignores the inconvenient fact that the fastest growing job segment in the US economy is in clean energy.
Who Is Supporting Trump’s Decisions?
It comes down to Scott Pruitt, Trump’s new director of the Environmental Protection Agency, who is a long-time climate change denier and Steve Bannon, Trump’s alt-right advisor, who stated that his ultimate goal is to dismantle the U.S. government.
Conservative groups like the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), The Heartland Institute, and the Heritage Foundation have written to Trump urging him to withdraw from the Paris Accord claiming that is the best way to promote his fossil fuels policy. Many of these groups receive funding from the billionaire petrochemical brothers Charles and David Koch. In addition the letter asks Trump to abide by his campaign promise to “stop all taxpayer funding of UN global warming programs.” (photo of David Koch – www.desmogblog.com)
Trump Forsakes Traditional Allies for “Strong” Leaders
Trump has managed in a few months to damage America’s relationships with its closest allies. He has picked fights with Canada, Mexico and the European Community. Germany’s Merkel and Trump can hardly stand to speak to each other and France’s new president, Macron is openly disdainful of Trump.
While the world’s democracies are reconsidering their historic relationship with the U.S., Trump meets with Erdogan, the dictatorial president of Turkey. After meeting with Trump, 24 members of Erdogan’s security detail felt sufficiently empowered to attack a small group of U.S. citizens that were peacefully protesting outside the Turkish Embassy. The Turkish thugs, seriously injured several of the protesters. Local police who were trying to protect the protestors arrested several of the Turks, however there is no condemnation from the White House.
Trump says Erdogan is a strong leader, using the same language to describe Duterte, President of the Philippines (a self-proclaimed assassin) who Trump has invited to visit the White House and of course Putin of Russia.
What Is Driving Trump?
Trump’s first action was to pull out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade agreement that took eight years to produce and was intended to strengthen U.S. bonds to its Asian allies. He threatens to pull out of NAFTA, the North America Free Trade Agreement and in the process insults Canada and Mexico.
Trump wants to repeal Obama Care, offering only pale imitations in its place and leaving millions uninsured. He rolls back initiatives on clean air, clean water and additions to the National Park system and Marine Protected Areas. Even popular programs to improve school nutrition and to finance Meals on Wheels are being cut.
Now Trump wants to pull the US out of the Paris Climate Accord. So, what is the one constant that runs through all of these issues. These are agreements or initiatives that were created or expanded during the Obama administration.
Trump is known for being vindictive and his personal feelings about Obama have been twittered nationally. First, the “Birther” claims, then comparing the size of crowds at his inauguration to Obama’s 2008 inauguration and then the false assertions that Obama was spying on him in Trump Tower. So is Trump’s personal agenda to erase the Obama legacy, if so what Obama built, Trump is smashing, and in the process causing untold harm to the nation, relations with its traditional allies and the health of the planet.
President Obama just released this statement, “Even as this administration joins a small handful of nations that reject the future; I’m confident that our states, cities and businesses will step up and do even more to lead the way, and help protect for future generations the one planetwe’ve got.” Join with President Obama to express unity on Defending Our Climate.
What Do We Do Now? Leo DiCaprio Says Don’t Give Up Hope
“Today, the future livability of our planet was threatened by President Trump’s careless decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement. Our future on this planet is now more at risk than ever before. For Americans and those in the world community looking for strong leadership on climate issues, this action is deeply discouraging. Now, more than ever, we must be determined to solve climate change, and to challenge those leaders who do not believe in scientific facts or empirical truths. It is time for all of us to stand up, organize, fight back, and channel our energy into grassroots political action.”
