scientists that support marine protected areas, donald trumpThere is an on-going attack on science and there is an attack on the scientists that support science. Most recently we have seen the Trump Administration seek to roll back Obama’s initiatives that created and expanded Marine Protected Areas or MPAs. While at the same time Trump is moving to: Aggressively Expand Offshore Drilling in Protected Areas.

Science has conclusively proven the value of protecting fish stocks and marine environments in MPAs. Now in a very short sighted attempt to “deregulate and create jobs” Trump and EPA head Scott Pruitt are eliminating any controls over the fishing industry by removing protections within MPAs. Breaking News:  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has dismissed five scientists of the 18 on its scientific review board. The scientists that were dismissed expressed surprise to have received dismissal notices because they had previously been assured that they would retain their positions through the new administration. A spokesperson for Scott Pruitt, Trump’s new administrator of the EPA told the New York Times that he was considering filling the positions with representatives from the industries that the EPA regulates because they “understand the impact of regulations on the regulated community.”

However, current review board members told the Times that they were concerned that the dismissals are a “test balloon” for further political moves against science.

Where Did All the Sardines Go?

Maybe it would be useful if Trump considered the consequences of job losses if fish stocks crash because of over-fishing. We are seeing exactly this situation play out on the Pacific Coast where the sardine fishing season has been closed for the third consecutive year as a result of years of uncontrolled fishing. See “Where Did All the Sardines Go?.”

You Can Support Science!

Now scientists are fighting back and you can join in this effort. Add your name along with those of Sylvia Earle and Carl Safina to this letter addressed to the Members of the Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard and all Members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

Go here to join in: Scientists Support Marine Protected Areas on the Marine Conservation Institute website. While on the page scroll down and check out the list of  scientists that have added their names to this petition (it is a very long and impressive list).
