Here’s some important news for all the Citizen Scientists out there. Ocean Sanctuaries is a non-profit based in San Diego dedicated to creating marine citizen science projects available to both divers and the general public.
Starting in 2018, Ocean Sanctuaries in partnership with REEF.org is offering a Marine Citizen Scientist Certification Course. The course consists of two parts:
Part I: The student would complete a basic online marine life and fish identification course with REEF, which has been available for several years now on REEF.org website. Residents of California would take the California fish ID and marine life invertebrates course and residents of the Pacific Northwest, Washington and Vancouver areas, could take the corresponding courses for the Pacific Northwest.
Upon completion of this REEF course participants could then proceed to:
Part II: Basic Scientific Concepts, Protocols and Tools for the Citizen Scientist, such as taking notes and scientific measurements in the field, using nautical maps and GPS and basic species taxonomy, to be designed and offered by Ocean Sanctuaries.
Upon satisfactory completion of Part I and Part II, a basic Marine Citizen Scientist certificate would be issued.
Similar certification courses may be offered in other parts of the US at a later date. Presently there is no charge for either part of the course. Please note, that this is not a scuba certification program. Any training with scuba equipment will need to be obtained outside of this course.
