Is the European Union ready to take this huge, but much needed, step? Frans Timmermans the vice president of the European commission has hinted that it might be coming soon, possibly in the next several months.
Timmermans’ remarks were prompted in an exchange with Michael Gove, Britain’s environmental minister, after Gove suggested that being in the EU made some environmental proposals more difficult. Timmermans responded by suggesting that “EU legislation on single-use plastics coming before the summer. Maybe you can align with us?” (photo – Flickr)
Urgent to Cut Plastic Consumption!
At a recent conference in Brussels, Timmermans said that there is “urgent work to do” to cut plastic consumption, especially in light of China’s recent decision to ban the importation of the developed world’s plastic waste. See our article: Where Does All That Garbage Go?
Timmermans continued to say that the strategy of the EU would include working with companies to cut the use of plastic and “find ways to re-use and recycle more plastic and avoid micro-plastic leakage.”
The Queen Backs the Ban
Britain recently banned the use of plastic bags, see: Great Britain leads the way in fighting Plastic Pollution.
The Queen personally, declared war on plastic after she saw Sir David Attenborough’s documentary Blue Planet II that aired an episode on the effects of plastic waste on marine life. The Queen was inspired to phase out single-use plastics in public cafes and royal residences.
And What About Legos?
The giant Danish toy Company has announced that they will spend $185.4M to find an alternative to wasteful plastic for its bricks. That’s about 1 billion Danish kroner (which can buy a lot of herring).
“This is a major step for the Lego Group on our way towards achieving our 2030 ambition on sustainable materials,” said Lego president Jørgen Vig Knudstorp.
