(Blue Ocean Network.com – Thursday June 5, 2014) — Day 5 of the Blue Ocean Business Summit kicks off on Friday June 6, 2014. This free online industry event calls all stakeholders to the table to discuss the future of the dive industry and the need to bring the ocean into their businesses as a full partner.
The first day, entitled Big Ocean, Big Picture gave participants a powerful grounding on the new way of doing business that will help business owners and travelers ride the waves of change occurring in our industry and world.
The second day, Redefining the Dive Resort delved deep into the resort experience, determining if tourists even know or care about sustainable tourism, and what successful resorts are doing to redefine themselves in light of the new blue business reality revealing itself right now.
The third day went to the heart of the matter with Honest Talk about Marine Conservation. We learned about exactly is going on out there in the underwater world and how people, considered ‘lower tier’ stakeholders in the dive industry, are getting on board to be a powerful part of the solution.
In Day 4 we started Travelling Towards Sustainability. We discussed where is the dive industry sitting in terms of environmentally-friendly travel and dive experiences? And what must we do to move forward to protect our businesses and grow the industry? It’s clear that the business model we’ve been riding on is not enough, even when the going was good. And now we’re paying the price.
Day 5 is the Blue Ocean Business Summit’s Day of Action. The Summit has been asking listeners to determine some action items they can jump on right away to guide the longterm viability of their businesses. In Change Comes Through Action, we’ll learn how talk is not enough. In fact too much talk can stall the process, by leaving people with the feeling that talking is actually doing – when it’s clearly not. Listeners will hear from people who are taking big action.
9:00 am EDT Emmy-award winning cinematographer and photographer, Shawn Heinrichs is a man of massive action. He’s been instrumental in setting up Manta Sanctuary, Indonesia’s largest MPA, going undercover with the endangered species trade and got the word out about the plight of the biggest fish in the sea, the Whale Shark. He’ll tell us how to capture the hearts and minds of the 98% that our business future relies upon in “Turning inspiration into real action.”
11:00 am EDT “Boosting Your Bottom Line: Building Sustainability into the Dive Center Business Model“, Sacha Greene Belter carries a unique title at the Boulder dive store where she works, that is redefining the dive industry. As Director of Sustainability at Oceans First Divers, Sacha is responsible for overseeing its sustainability efforts, and has been instrumental in the creation of a Sustainable Dive Operation program through Sustainable Travel International. The journey is fascinating. Don’t miss the twists and turns.
1:00 pm EDT Vicki Nichols Goldstein knows how to communicate her love of the ocean and inspire her inland community to do so too. As founder of the Colorado Ocean Coalition, Vicki is a savvy communicator who’ll show you how to talk about the issues nobody wants to talk about in “Blue the Dive Industry: Working within to promote conservation below.”
3:00 pm EDT Dr. Carl Safina is the esteemed closing Keynote Speaker for Summit. He is a brilliant writer and communicator of ocean issues, who connects them to the broader societal issues we see on TV every night like poverty, social injustice, violence, lack of education for girls, oil industry and more. In his view, the ocean is a metaphor for our disconnected society, and once we start making the connections, the answers will appear. The solutions are all there and are waiting for individuals to engage to activate them. So much hope grounded in scientific research and genius-level thinking. Carl is an inspiration to us all.
Summit on a Mission
